The outdoor season started last week for the track and field team, and, despite the poor weather conditions, the Patriots are off to a good start. Alazae Hester-Taylor, who has been All-State multiple times and is an individual state champion in triple jump, signed with Coffeyville Community College in Kansas, which is an outstanding junior college program. Alazae has been an integral part of four state championship teams and will have a tremendous collegiate career. In addition to Alazae and Kiara Williams, who committed to Alabama earlier in the year, there should be several more athletes who earn scholarships in the upcoming months. The program will have a signing day in either April or May.
The varsity team opened up with the Battle Royale at Mountain Brook last Friday where the boys finished 2nd behind Hewitt-Trussville, and the girls finished 2nd behind Mountain Brook. Although neither team was at full strength, the teams had some great early-season performances in the cold against some good 7A competition. Event winners were Madison Kirkwood, Sarah Blake, Christian Hill, Kiara Williams, Andy Smith, and Alazae Hester-Taylor. Homewood also had some excellent performances at a JV Meet at Mountain Brook on Tuesday of this week. Freshmen John Andrew Dill, Nick McCoy, and Madison Kirkwood all had great performances to lead Homewood. Both the boys and girls teams will compete in a limited number of events this weekend at the Hoover Relays.
