After the first two meets of the cross country season the Patriots have a lot to be excited about. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams have the #1 rankings in 6A after competing at Montevallo on August 30th and Chickasaw Trails on September 7th. The JV Girls, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys all came away with wins at Montevallo. Lainey Phelps (18:04) and Crawford Hope (15:25) both set meet records and won the varsity races, and Lily Blish (21:30) won the JV Girls division. There were numerous personal bests, and the meet was an incredible start to the season. The Varsity Girls top five were Phelps, Celie Jackson (19:37), Maris Owen (20:45), Zoe Nichols (20:50), and Laura Kemper (21:10). The Varsity Boys top five were Hope, Jon Fielding Stogner (16:11), Jackson Merrell (16:21), Carson Bedics (16:29), and Sam Gray (17:05).
Chickasaw Trails is a highly competitive meet that brings teams from across the Southeast. Despite the difficult race conditions that included extreme heat and a lot of dust, many Homewood athletes persevered and found a way to still run well. Both varsity teams placed higher than any other 6A teams and placed in the top five overall. The Varsity Girls were 3rd behind Brentwood, TN and Mountain Brook. Lainey Phelps won for the second week in a row, and Laura Kemper (20:55, PR), Celie Jackson (21:06), Zoe Nichols (21:39), and Maris Owen (22:00) rounded out the top five. The Varsity Boys were 4th despite not having Crawford Hope because of an ankle injury, and finished behind Huntsville, Vestavia, and Franklin, TN. Jon Fielding Stogner (16:03, PR), Jackson Merrell (16:16, PR), and Carson Bedics (17:00) led the way for the boys. Freshmen boys Sam Gray (17:12), Grayton Murray (17:33), and Andrew Laird (17:46) all had tremendous races. Additionally, the JV Girls won the meet and were led by Alex Steltenpohl (21:59) and Sydney Dobbins (22:02). Homewood will compete again on September 21st at the The Southern Showcase in Huntsville.
