The boys and girls varsity soccer teams took their first step together toward the state title Thursday, winning their AHSAA playoff first round matches against Minor and Jasper, respectively.
The boys played first in the pair of matches at Waldrop Stadium and opened scoring five minutes into the match through Bryan Sokell who would go on to complete a hat trick. William Handley provided the assist for Sokell’s next two goals and also provided the key pass for Jack Crouch and Jack Giffin’s goals. The game finished 8-0 to the Patriots with seniors Adonijah Kaplelach, Hardy Smith and Jacob Sitton also scoring.
The girls team also cruised to victory after an early burst of goals that saw Lilly Lowery steer a free header into the back of the net off a corner kick in the second minute, before Eleanor Kyle added two more in the third and fourth minute. Maddie Massie added a brace of goals, looping one around the goalkeeper and striking one just inside the back post while Anna Harbin and Emma Blackmon both tapped in from close range. Rika Kellen scored a hatrick, rocketing the third past the keeper with just a minute left in the first half before Selah Deluc finished off a great team move from close range with seconds remaining in the half.
The boys will play at Clay Chalkville for the second round on Monday at 6 p.m., and the girls will play at Shades Valley either Monday or Tuesday.
