Homewood (28-16) avenged a previous loss in pool play to Auburn High School in two sets to win the silver division of the 33rd Annual Margaret Blalock Tournament. Homewood started pool play Friday with a loss to 5A top-ranked Bayside Academy 17-25, 20-25. Homewood then rebounded with a win over Daphne 25-20, 25-18. Saturday morning, Homewood lost in three sets to Auburn High School 25-19, 21-25, 12-15. The Patriots then beat Oak Mountain in three sets 25-16, 17-25, 16-14, creating a three-way tie for second place. Tie breaking procedures seeded Homewood 4th in the pool, sending them to the silver bracket where they faced Vestavia. The Patriots beat the Rebels in three sets in the quarterfinals of the silver bracket 25-16, 17-25, 15-7, and then beat Alexandria in the semifinals 27-29, 25-20, 15-9. The Patriots were then given the opportunity to face Auburn High School again, where they won in two sets 25-20, 29-27.
Olivia Outman led the Patriots with 138 assists, 48 digs, five aces, and two kills. Sarah Smith led the defense with 98 digs, 16 assists, six aces, and one kill, averaging a 2 pass average. Olivia Brown led the offense with 52 kills, 52 digs, seven aces, and seven blocks. Mackenzie Yoakum added 48 kills, 17 digs, and eight blocks. Lily Janas added 28 kills and 11 blocks. The Patriots will play in the Area 9 Tournament this Tuesday, October 13th, at 5:30 pm against Chelsea High School. The winner will advance to the Area Championship.
